Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Museum

Taikan Yokoyama is a big name in Japanese arts in 19th century.
This museum surrounded by wooden wall was his house.

His art studio is on the second floor facing to Shinobazu Pond.
He needs natural light to see the real colors.

His house is a typical old Japanese house in Kyoto Sukiya style.

The University Art Museum, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music

The University Art Museum is on the campus of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

Fine Arts department and Music department are located on the other side of the road.
They are close to Tokyo National Museum.

It has not only exhibitions from its collections but also special exhibitions.

Benten-Dou

Benten-Dou is on the island in the middle of Shinobazu Pond.
Original Benten-Dou was built in the 17th century. Current building was built in 1958.
This temple is a part of Kan-eiji Temple, too.

Shinobazu Pond is a copy of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan near Kyoto.
The island is a copy of Chikubu Island in Lake Biwa.

Ueno Park itself is a copy of Kyoto.

Shinobazu Pond is filled with lotus.

Gojo Tenjinsha Shrine

Nobody knows how old Gojo Tenjinsha Shrine is.
An ancient document mentioned about this shrine in 1486.

This shrine is for medical care.

It's located right next to Hanazono Inari Shrine.

Hanazono Inari Shrine

Hanazono Inari Shrine was restored in 1654 and changed its name to Hanazono Inari Shrine in 1873.

There're many orange Torii gates on the stairs.
Thousand Torii gates of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto is famous.
This shrine may give you some feeling of visiting Kyoto.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine - Inside the Wall

You can get closer to the main building if you get into the wall.
The wall is called transparent wall since it has grid pattern.

Buildings and gates are covered with gold foils and sculptures.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine

Toshogu is a shrine to deify Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first Shogun to have started Edo era.
There're many Toshogues everywhere in Japan.

This shrine was established in 1627 and current buildings are ones rebuilt in 1651 by the third Shogun Iemitsu. These buildings survive even with the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II.

Five story pagoda belongs to Kan-eiji Temple even though it's located right next to Toshogu Shrine.

Kiyomizu-Dou

Kiyomizu-Dou was established in 1631.
It's a copy of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto.

There's an unique shape of pine tree which is called "Moon pine tree" in front of the stage of Kiyomizu-Dou. It's drawn in Ukiyo-e by Hiroshige Ando about 150 years ago.

Current pine tree was arranged recently. to copy this Ukiyo-e.
It took three years to make it.

Ueno Daibutsu

A statue of Great Buddha was made in 1631 but it has only face now.
All other parts were used to make weapon during World War II.

Actually he dropped his head at the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1912.

There's a pagoda at the place where Great Buddha used to be.
