Ueno Toshogu Shrine

Toshogu is a shrine to deify Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first Shogun to have started Edo era.
There're many Toshogues everywhere in Japan.

This shrine was established in 1627 and current buildings are ones rebuilt in 1651 by the third Shogun Iemitsu. These buildings survive even with the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II.

Five story pagoda belongs to Kan-eiji Temple even though it's located right next to Toshogu Shrine.
